요약2 When design is studied as part of a general curriculum it can often be difficult to effectively deliver all of the necessary learning experiences, such as collaborations with other design schools, or with professional practitioners. Many design schools usually provide students a short period of workshops with focused content. Generally, students are required to learn and complete every task involved in the design process but, because of limited time they cannot learn continuously in conjunction with the general curriculum. From the observations at the School of Architecture and Design, (SoA+D) KMUTT, the evidences showed that students gained some secondary knowledge from mentors leading workshops, but they did not gain much first-hand experience from these tasks. To improve the effectiveness of the workshop, the process called 'Press and Release' was introduced to the cross cultural collaboration International Furniture Design Workshop between NAFA and KMUTT in 2013 and 2014. The main idea of 'Press and Release' is to encourage students to work continuously and gain a deeper experience from the tasks. The 'Press' element of the workshop is designed to support students in focusing on what they intend to do in response to the brief, while also introducing them to some material and manufacturing conditions. It also allows the students an opportunity to work closely with mentors. Following this the 'Release' phase allows students to work on their own and encourages gathering of further information resources and explorations of their works. It was considered more beneficial of the 'Release' session to be longer than 'Press' session. This case study follows the progress of the International Furniture Design Workshop, attended by NAFA and KMUTT students and designed to switch between two 'Press' sessions and two 'Release' sessions. The results showed that 'Press' sessions helped students to realize their design focus and ways to develop the works. Whereas, the time spent and new information gathered during the 'Release' phase further refined the design focus. With the 'Press and Release' method, students had a chance to experience designing on a trial and error basis, while embedding the idea of continuous learning.
