The way to consider whether a complex of historic buildings is worthy to conserve is when it has been continuously inhabited for more than 50 years, and demonstrates its unique way of life among its surroundings. This related to Conservation Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage 1972-UNESCO. Such a place with unique architectural designs that is outstanding from its surrounding context. However, in Thailand, these kinds of historical areas are slowly disappearing due to the rising of modern material culture and a losing local traditional acknowledgement. Then the traditional community should be conserved. A sense of identity of a place can be retrieved from its distinctive architecture, environment, and the way of life of local people. This can also create a sense of place for individuals as somewhere they have been to or known before, as well highlighting aspects that make such a place different from others. Using the case study of a historic rowed houses of Chinese merchant community in Sunthorn Vijit Road, Nakhon Phanom. These houses existed on the center of the town and along the Mekong River for more than 80 years, the procedure of examining and understanding the history and nature of old buildings, architecture and surrounding community can be taken as an initial approach for the rehabilitation and conservation of a sense of place in the future. |
