In Japan today, traditional Japanese housing styles and shitsurai are disappearing rapidly due to the increasing diversity of options related to lifestyles and interior decor. With continuing globalization and flourishing international exchanges, highly appraising and promoting original interior styles that are deeply rooted in tradition are essential in increasing each country's appeal. This being the case, research into interior design is a necessity. Chiefly targeting people who live in the Tokai area, this study investigated people's attitudes towards shitsurai and ascertained this situation. The results showed that in terms of like/dislike, approximately half answered 'like', and in terms of gender difference, a higher rate of females answered 'like'. Many respondents answered that 'creating a sense of seasonality' and 'cleanliness' are things to be mindful of with regard to shitsurai. It was also revealed that it is through shitsurai that values are shared and handed down from one generation to the next. |
