This paper analyzes the characteristics of spatial composition in Korean traditional architecture. Fist of all, five traditional Korea thought or concepts(Harmony with nature, Organic interrelationship, Complementary Dual Structure, Space related with time, Hierarchical order) are categorized as main influenees to its design principle. Second, this paper conceptualizes them into ten properties in plain terms(Holonic composition, Transitional space, Hierarchy by floor level, Gradation of privacy, Changeability, Various central yards, Space with openrd deges, Gray Space, Continuity of space, Interpenetrating space) and explains them in greater detail case studies. It also provides visual diagrams for easier adaptations of these design concepts. The analyzed properties from the tradition-al Korean architectures in this paper consistently appear in contemporary Korean architecture and could be applied as universal design principle. |
