Expressing a world of realizing humanism is the ideology of surrealistic arts. The importance of the men-tal aspect of human nature is well recognized in modern space design. Surrealism expresses a world of unconsciousness through free association and shows visual amusement, pleasure and mystery. Design hotel is a familiar and private space for human, and it is where people can experience worlds of conscious-ness and unconsciousness within a very short tiom. This study examines surrealistic expressions shown in guest rooms of design hotel. The results of this study show that designs of surrealistic spaces are differenti-ated from those of other spaces. Expressional characteristics were classified into serendipity, fantasy, Black humor, heterogeneity, and symbolism. Expressional methods were categorized into , ,, , Subconsciousness is expressed with polysemic form of extraordinary juxtaposition and dramatic situations of space. The analysis of this study shows that methods and principles of spatial expression are not limited into one characteristic, and they can be applied variously and in combination. Surrealistic spatial expressions in a hotel play a role of an exit from ordinary life for modern people by cre-ating sensory and sensitive images and achieving mental sympathy also in hotel space. |
