Sustainability is generally acknowledfed as a ked challenge faced by global society in the 21st cen-tury. Assuming leadership toward solution of this problem, higher education has made commitments to advance sustainability through education, research, outreach, and institutional performance. Sustainable design has become the ideal for collegiate architecture and operations, including student campus housing, a historically significant component of US colleges and universities. Green resi-dence buildings and sustainability-focused living-learning centers emerge as models contributing to the environmental education of students and facilitating green on campus. This paper summa-rizes and reviews trends in sustainable student campus housing; overviews the state of sustainable student campus housing in US colleges and universities; end compares the different approaches to sustainable design taken by two institutions of higher education in housing their students with fami-lies-the retrofitted village and the ecovillage. |
