After long national isolation from outside world, Chosun was forced to open by Japan in the end of the 19th century. Alongside opening the ports, Chosun began to import the western civilizations that significantly influenced the high class's people. After Chosun society's adaptation to the western civilization, the traditional strategy for reception of envoy considering the Sadaegyorin(事大交燐) reduced the power. Namely, the audience hall, reception hall and banquet hall for country's diplomacy were required to change. In this paper, I will examine the space and the interior of audience hall for foreigner in royal palace after the opening of the ports. The subjects of research are Gyeongbokgung(景福宮) and Gyeongungung(慶運宮), two important palaces of the late Chosun period and the Korean Empire of Kojong's reign. This survey will be processed based on the foreigners' experience reports. |
