For an elderly person a simple fall that results in a broken bone can become a serious, disabling injury that limits the persons' independence. While many home safety assessments have been developed for the elderly, there are few assessments that focus on fall prevention. The purpose of this research is to analyze existing home safety assessments in order to provide fundamental information for developing a fall prevention assessment. This research involves investigating ten home safety assessments which were developed by government and university research centers. The research methods include: 1) classifying existing assessments by spaces and environmental elements, 2) identifying specific fall related concerns, and 3) analyzing factors for elderly fall prevention. The results of this research will be used to create a design guideline for building and remodeling homes that will allow the elderly to age in place. |
