Spatial ability, or the capacity to represent, transform, and generate 2D or 3D information, is considered important in a designer's job performance. Because the goal of interior design is to create 3D inhabitable spaces, the media for communicating interior design information is in 2D or 3D format. Researchers and educators have made numerous attempts to develop methods to improve spatial ability, and the recently introduced Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies show the potential for use in training to do so. This study reports the following findings from a review of 24 research articles. First, the fidelity and the presence of VR and AR have the potential to facilitate motivation, understanding of content, and immersion, essential in improving spatial ability. Second, the effect of VR and AR in improving spatial ability varied depending on users' level of acceptance of technology, the subconstructs of spatial ability measured, and the length of the training period. Third, individual differences in spatial ability should be considered in particular with those who are weak in spatial ability because they may experience difficulty and cognitive load in dealing with 3D information. |
