The various components of modern society relate to each other as a network. These organic structures feature uncertainties and unpredictabilities, forming a new paradigm of modern society. The concept of Gilles Deleuze's 'Rhizome', which is a way of thinking for seeing objects from the perspective of flow and relationships, is similar to the characteristics of the organic structure of modern society. In modern architecture, there have been attempts to define architectures in relation to the various components of the city. This study defines the typical 'rhizomatic spatial components' through analyzing these attempts about the rhizomatic space. In this study, architectural spatial components are classified into four categories : layout, program, circulation, and boundary. Based on these four categories, 'rhizomatic spatial components' are defined as four elements: nonhierarchical layout, void program, selective wandering circulation, blurred boundary. In addition, this study is expected a paradoxical effect of applying the 'rhizomatic spatial components' to church architecture, which is representative of the hierarchical space against the rhizomatic space. And it is intended to demonstrate the specific realization of the rhizomatic space. |
