As modern urbanization diminished the original functionality of industrial facilities that once symbolized cities, the urban community has come to abandon these industrial facilities. As the need to reutilize these idle spaces grew, the efforts to reuse these spaces focused solely on the reutilization itself, with little reflection on and awareness of the damaging impact of industrialization. It has thus become essential to devise new measures to ensure the effective use of idle industrial space. As a solution, this study applies the expressive characteristics of landscape urbanism, which utilizes abandoned spaces and sites to seamlessly connect indoors and outdoors, enhance connectivity of the space with the surrounding environment, vitalize cultural activity and exchange with the community and the citizens, and integrate with the natural environment to provide a scenic landscape. This study shows that identifying and applying the expressive characteristics of landscape urbanism can achieve the following: enhance the connectivity of idle industrial facilities with exterior spaces, enabling the idle space to reach beyond its singular functionality to vitalize activity in the community; provide the green belt and place of rest direly needed in densely populated urban areas, transforming the idle space into a scenic location; and repurpose idle industrial space to serve as a multipurpose space that seamlessly and functionally connects with the city. This study recommends the application of expressive characteristics of landscape urbanism as a way to ensure effective reutilization of idle industrial facilities. |
