Augmented reality, which appeared with the advent of the information age, can augment one's sense of reality and immerse a person in a seamlessly combined real and virtual world. In this respect, there has been an interest in space or augmented reality and in particular, with regard to historical trends, museums have been orienting themselves toward guests rather than collections. Therefore, this study aims to examine national and international museums where augmented reality has been in place since 2008 targeting non-profit exhibitions with a purpose for an emotional experience. To figure out immersion factors for virtual reality immersion in museums, this study categorized immersion in an augmented reality into immersion through stories, immersion through a five-senses experience, and immersion through spatial directions, based on previous studies. As a result of analysing the different cases, it was discovered that immersion through a five-senses experience was most frequently used when including all the display media. Education and interest provided through monitors and portable IT equipment were available to museum guests and projector type displays using space were used less. In sum up, this study investigated non-profit exhibitions in museums which have introduced augmented reality to understand the immersion factors and characteristics of augmented reality in museums, and presented basic data for future museum immersion projects. |
