The purpose of this study was to analyze the spatial design trend through the analysis of the themes and the contents of the major spatial design exhibition in Korea - Kyung Hyang Housing Fair and Seoul Living Design Fair- based on the periodical issues in political, economic, and socio-cultural background from 1986 to 2013. Content analysis was used as a research method. Periodical information about each exhibition was collected through the online search and supplementary materials such as guidebook were added for content analysis. The major findings were as follows: Since t980s, there was an increased need and interest for housing and interior design and the 1st Kyung Hyang Housing Fair was opened in 1986. In 1990s, design quality improvement was emphasized based on the issues of IMF and shoddy and fault construction such as collapse of Sam Poong department store. Due to the broad dissemination of internet, globalization, and emergence of diverse household type, demand for housing and interior design was diversified after 2000s. Additionally, the global concepts associated with sustainability, energy saving, and green growth were influenced to spatial design field. Lately, interaction design is rapidly developing due to proliferation of SNS and smart mobile equipment. Meanwhile, there is a continuing trend for emotional design in recent years. |
