While the development toward high-tech society accelerates in our society, the interest of the space design field in the utilization of nature continues to this day. Originally in East Asian culture, the interest in nature was an extension of the interest in human beings, beyond the question of harmony with nature and its applicability. The Won-Lim could be an example of the type of space in which such concept is well reflected. But it is a pity that in the process of modernization of Eastern society, Western discourse dominated and the meaning of the Won-Lim faded and lost its unique pattern and significance of space. One of the most greatest misunderstandings of the Won-Lim is found in the fact that it is being used as the same concept as 'garden'. Basically, East Asian culture has a different relationship with nature from the Western perception. Consequently, it had a unique view of nature and ways of expressing it quite differently from Western concept of garden. Therefore, this study aims to classify the types of perception of nature and the Won-Lim in order to enhance our understanding of the arbor garden, a space peculiar to East Asia. |
