The nature of work has changed rapidly as organizations are spatially distributed, cheaper and more ubiquitous technical devices are introduced, and more workplace flexibilities are demanding. In this study, the definitions of smart workplace were examined. A variety of smart workplaces could be provided with the degree of openness (open vs enclosed), the degree of formality(formal vs informal), the degree of sharedness(assigned vs shared), duration of stay(long vs short), and the level of individual work and collaboration(individual vs group). The types of smart workplaces were enumerated. In addition, smart workplace can be characterized based on the cost range, methods of administration, technical and equipment features, and occupancy patterns. For smart workplace, planning elements are enlisted according to physical aspects, psychological aspects, and technological aspects. We examined smart workplace strategies and how the strategies applied to the case smart workplacs, especially for individual workspace, collaborative spaces, and communal and support spaces. In general, the amount of space per employee was reduced, employees perceive the workplace more spacious and universal plan regardless of status was a dominant feature. |
