Amongst the artistic works known to us today, the oldest were the works painted and sculptured by those who lived in caves in the early civilization. The figures in art expressed in their own space of ‘cave’ enable us to conjecture the meanings of creative and essential ornament such as prayer for fecundity, production, survival, and incantation. In a broader range of focus on architecture, space, and art according to the Western history, ornament also evolved into the murals or mosaic styles on the walls and ceilings of ancient architectural structure and cathedrals, and from this time on, the term of ‘ornament’ has settled as a linguistic expression to denote the figures made with various techniques. This ornament sometimes expressed the stylized decorative elements that developed with the imitation of leafy forms in nature, and other times combined the organic figures in nature such as those of plants, animals, and humans with the non-organic figures like crystalloid and natural phenomena. Like this, the ornament that has repetitively developed through history is shown today as an important concept that constitutes organic harmony with environmental, cultural, and technological interactions. The present day is witnessing the change into the new era that general people want not so much abstract as expressive, gorgeous, and pleasant forms, and the contemporary interior design is reflecting the ‘figural’ approach in various aspects. In this situation, it is considered necessary to examine the expression characteristics of various figural ornament in contemporary interior space. |
