Recently, Violence of middle school has been increasingly severe and it was found that most of the violence occurs in classroom. The purposes of this study are to (1) identify the situation of middle school violence and the physical environment of classrooms through survey of 6 middle schools in Gangseo-gu, Seoul and (2) suggest the classroom design guidelines for preventing violence. The results are as follows: First, need to plan the proper size of the classroom avoiding overcrowd. Second, maximize natural surveillance by locating teacher's spaces nearby the classroom and taking off window sheets for better visibility. Third, install locks, emergency bells and CCTV for the natural access control. Fourth, apply different design between classroom and hallway for better identification and display the student's art pieces on the wall to reinforce territoriality. Fifth, need to use durable and pollution resistable materials and constant management is needed for the classroom. |
