Domestically, large-scale housing complexes have been quantitatively developed since the 1970s, which has resulted in worsening residential environment and simplifying housing options. Now that housing supply ratio reaches over 100%, demands are increasing for improving standards of life, stable supply of housing and diversified forms of housing accommodating a wide range of lifestyles rather than quantitative expansion on the supply side. Accordingly, the present study examines small-scale collective housings in Japan in terms of design concepts and approaches with a view to seeking ways to break away from uniform housing culture in favor of a variety of individualized lifestyles and to find future directions for domestic small-scale housings to take. Small-scale collective housings in Japan covered in the 'New Construction(Shin Geon Chook)' magazine from 2005 to 2009 are selected for analysis here with focus put on commentary literature in the magazine based on pictures and drawings. Over 100 cases are holistically and relatively analyzed and reviewed to clarify how modern Japanese architects consider and design collective housings. |
