Among the new spartial design method, algorithmic thinking is receiving wide interest. By adapting algorithmic thinking to spatial design process, new and unique design elements were able to acquired. However, theoretical establishment hasn't been completed. Therefore, algorithmic thinking-adpted design process has been used only by a number of pioneer architects and designers, regarded as an experimental process. This study attempts to investigate, an pioneer architect who adapts algorithmic thinking, Toyo Ito, his design process and his recent works to clarify his motive and goal to adapt algorithmic thinking, and to present possibility as a new creative process. In this study, six design projects of Toyo Ito after the year of 2001 were selected to be analyzed. The study was conducted through reviewing detailed design process provided in magazines and publications. Based on the result, despite the detailed design methods are different from each other, Toyo Ito adapts algorithmic thinking into his design process to acquire a new form and shape which never have existed before. Adapting algorithmic thinking could be a valid method as a new creative design method. |
