The Benedictine Abbey at Deokwon(Wonsan in Hamgyeongnam-do) was the second monastery of St. Ottilien Abbey in Korea. It has been being evaluated as successful model of Missions, Monastic life and Architecture in the Benedictine Missionary monasteries. It was destroyed during the Korean War, and the site has been changed by using as Wonsan Agricultural University. On the other hand, the Wagwan Monastery, built 78 years later, was modeled on the Deokwon Monastery. In this study, I conducted a stylistic comparative study on the architecture of Deokwon Monastery and Wagwan Monastery. The results of this study are as follows : First, Deokwon Monastery was very faithful to Romanesque style both inside and outside design, however the Monastery of Waegwan, the exterior is close to the neo-Romanesque, the inside was only the auditorium type church. Second, the internal space of the church, as the ratio of aisle to nave is 1: 2.75 for Deokwon Monastery, while it is 1: 5.5 for Wagwan Monastery. The ratio of width to the ceiling height is also 1: 1.09 in the Deokwon Monastery, while it is 1: 0.53 in the Waegwan Monastery. The Deokwon Monastery is faithful to the Romanesque style based on Basilican style church plan, while the Waegwan Monastery is close to the Hall church. Third, Deokwon Monastery is the most complete Romanesque monastery built in Asia. However, after the fire, the Waegwan Monastery, built as a model of the Deokwon Monastery, is a Neo-Romanesque style architecture that is not fully completed. |
