The aim of this study is to review the multi-perspectival characteristics of Steven Holl's museum architecture. Multi-perspectives in his works show not only museum characteristics that intend movement and spatial experience but also his own concretization of phenomenological architecture. Holl's multi-perspectival characteristics are developed from the concept of parallax. Beyond, however, simple spatial experience, his multi-perspective can be considered as a case to dissolve Western dualism of the subject and the object in architectural field. Multi-perspectives in his architecture appeared as the maximization of visual experience through diversification of view points and vanishing points. Holl seems to intend to make the variation of vanishing points by overlapping of visual frames and changes of view points by movement. In this situation, lights plays important role in shaping multi-perspectives. Lights from various directions not only act as elements of view making but also affect view configuration its changes through time. In these respects, Steven Holl's multi-perspectival approach is the his continuous and concrete realization method of phenomenological architecture beyond theoretical application. |
