요약1	이 연구의 목적은 2000년 주요 국가정책인 [교육정보화] 사업과 OECD 산하 PEB의 정보화사회에 대응하는 교육환경의 개선에 대한 사업의 일환으로, 기존 도서관(실)의 변형된 기능으로서 효율적 컴퓨터활용을 위한 초 중등학교 정보자료실의 모형개발을 위한 것이다. 미래의 정보화 지식기반사회에서는 정보활용 능력이 중요한 변수로 작용하게되며, 이러한 사회적 추이는 교육현장에서의 학습방법 및 제반환경의 변화를 요구하고 있다. 이는 학교에서의 기존 교과과정 이외에 주도적이고 독립적인 정보활용 능력을 개발시킬 수 있는 방법의 운영이 필요함을 의미한다. 이를 위해서는 학생과 교사 모두에게 필요한 정보를 적절히 제공해줄 수 있는 통합적 운영 체계가 필요하다. 학교에서의 정보자료제공의 주요 수단인 도서관(실)은 그 기능이 독서 및 토론 이외에 멀티미디어, 디지털 교육자료 제공 등 점차 학생 및 지역주민의 정보자료 공간으로의 활용범위가 확장되고 있다.그러므로, 이에 대응하는 정보화 시대의 도서관(실) 개조를 위한 기본적인 모형의 개발이 이루어져야 한다.
요약2	The purpose of this study is to develope a prototypical unit design for the Information Resource Center(IRC) for K-12 schools in Korea. Literature from various sources were examined. A survey was administered to sixty-three elementary and middle schools in Korea. A case study was conducted to two elementary schools in Korea and one elementary school in Portugal. Design standards and prototypical unit design for the IRC were developed applicable to existing K-12 schools in Korea. The prototypical unit design suggested in this study optimize the needs of the students, teachers, and neighborhoods for the space of information, reading, consultation, graphic production, and group activities. The results of this study indicated that there needs consistent government educational policies, increased financial investment on computers and supporting media facilities, and partnership with the design professionals
