AbstractThis study focuses on the explication of the various modes of expression (representation) shown in the design of Gaetano Pesce. Pesce, the Italian-born designer, architect, and one time theater director, is one of the leading magnificos in the contemporary international scene. His one represents itself as one of the mainstream post-war Italian designs, which include such prominent figures as Gio Ponti, Joe Colombo, Alessandro Mendini, and Ettore Sottsass.Pesce' design is differentiated by his unique design philosophy which puts special stress on artist's creativity and his open-minded attitude material and everyday life. Several traits of his mode of representation are under close examination in this study: religious symbolism, social message, body image, material innovation, and surrealistic technique of painting.In sum, Pesce advocates a special design philosophy of his own--that design should be an art, and a way of life rather than a mere industry. In this way Pesce's design says something about what design means in the contemporary world. |
