AbstractThe purpose of this research is to grasp the meaning of housing design in relation to gender and to present the ways of design to equalize gender in home through the analysis of previous literature. The main research method employed was literature analysis. The literature covered in the study were recent publications on gender and spaces.As a result, approaches found in previous literature were functional, aesthetic, and social ones. According to the three aforementioned approaches, some of design guidelines were generated, where the following were emphasized; efficient housework for every family member, non-isolation in doing housework, flexibility to cope with changing gender roles in the future, accommodation of physical differences and equal reflection of the sexes, and ways to solve household problems from a social view. This research dealt with gender and spaces in the view of Universal Design, whose concept was evolved as a reaction against discrimination of human-beings and lack of human equality in the process of modern civilization. To improve the equality of human life, through space planning, the guidelines generated in this study can be used effectively |
