| 요약1 | 19세기 영국의 가장 독창적인 건축가로서 영국 건축의 아버지로 평가되고 있는 죤 손경(Sir John Soane, 1753-1837)은 매킨토시(Charles Rennie Mackintosh, 1868-1928)와 비슷하게 건축물의 외부 형태로 알려지기보다는 실내공간의 독창성으로 더 잘 알려져 있다. 매킨토시가 아르누보에서 보여지는 장식적 디자인에 관심을 보였다면, 죤 손경은 실내 공간에 있어 빛의 가능성과 공간의 다양성을 보여준다. 그는 공간적 아이디어 적용을 위해 자신의 주택을 모델로 사용했다. 1792년 시작되어 1812년과 1824년에 증축되어진 그의 주택은 그가 완성하고자 했던 실내공간을 위한 공간실험의 장이었다. 그는 약 27.5m X 27.5m X 9m(높이)인 공간에 무한히 복잡한 실내공간을 완성하였다. 12, 13, 14번지 링컨스인필드(No. 12, 13, 14 Lincoln`s Inn Fields)의 주택은 현재 박물관으로 바뀌어 손박물관(The Soane`s Museum)으로 일반에게 공개되어 있다. 그의 작품은 신 고전주의 (neo-classical)적인 작품으로 알려져 있다. 그러나 작품들의 복잡하고 신비로운 실내공간을 보면 낭만적 자연주의 작품이라고 하여야 할 것이다. 일반적으로 낭만적 자연주의는 규칙으로부터의 해방과 이성의 엄격성에서 탈피하여 직관과 자연의 세계로 향하는 것을 주장하였다. 건축적으로 볼 때 낭만적 자연주의 형태는 직선적이기보다는 공간적 풍부함을 갖는 `회화적(Picturesque)`이라는 표현을 쓴다. 낭만적 자연주의의 가장 큰 공헌은 내부공간의 발전인 것이다. 다시 말하면, 죤 손경의 실내공간은 강렬하고 유기적이며 신비로운 공간의 형태로 구성되어 있다. 이는 그의 성격을 반영하는 듯하다. 그는 천재성에도 불구하고 자신의 스승이었던 조지 댄스(George Dance)의 절대적인 영향으로 인해 자신의 작품에 대해 불확실해 했다 한다. 그러므로 자신의 작품에 만족치 못했고 항상 새로운 것을 향한 변화를 추구하는 성격이었다. 현존하는 그의 건축물 중 실내 공간의 관심과 건축적 본질을 가장 잘 나타내 주고 있는 건축물로는 런던의 영국은행(Bank of England), 손박물관 (손경의 주택, No. 13 Lincoln`s Inn Fields), 덜위치 사진 갤러리(Dulwich Picture Gallery)가 있다. 이들 건축물 내부에서 보여지는 공간적 특징은 이후 팍스톤(Paxton)의 수정궁(Crystal Palace), 라브르스트의 건축 등에 영향을 끼쳤다. 본 연구는 죤 손경(Sir John Soane) 작품의 건축적 경향들을 살펴보고, 특히 실내공간의 실험실로 사용했던 손 미술관을 분석하여 손경이 독창적이고 신비로운 실내공간을 구성하는데 사용한 실내디자인의 특징적 요소들을 발견하고 그 요소들의 현대적 적용 가능성을 제시하는데 그 목적이 있다. |
| 요약2 | Sir John Soane(1753-1837) was the most original English architect of 19c. His extremely personal style is superficially neo-classical but, romantic or `picturesque` in its complicated and unexpected spatial interplay. The Soane`s style was one of the curiosities of European architecture. Sir John Soane, like Mackintosh, was best known for his interior spaces. He used his own house as a laboratory of spatial experimentation to develop his spatial ideas. The objective of this study was to examine his architectural style through his various architectural works and analyze The Soane`s Museum(his house, No. 12, 13, 14 Lincoln`s Inn Fields, London, UK) in order to find interior design elements which represent the best of Soane`s interior design effects. As a result, this study found that Soane held no theories as to proportion. It gives the condition of the building`s freedom. He shows the `primitivism` facade and the simple neo-classical symmetry exterior arrangement. As interior design elements he used the layered structure, the natural skylight, the pendentive dome, the space in space, the picturesque style. These elements create magical interior space of The Soane`s Museum. The spatial intrigue is further enhanced by various degrees of lighting that additionally emphasize the three-dimensional quality of the object-loaded walls and piers. One can always look through to space beyond many individual objects, both horizontally and vertically. These interior elements can be used for the modern interior design development in order to create the expansion of space and the territoriality of space. |
