The energy consumption of the buildings is generated by responding to climate change. Climate factors such as solar radiation, outdoor temperature, humidity, rain, wind, and other elements can affect indoor environment through the building facade. The energy and environmental performance of the buildings depends on how the building facade responds properly to the climate characteristics. These energy and environmental performance of the building facade can be altered by facade design which is decided during the early design stage. Therefore, in the early design stage, the architect needs to design the building facade with consideration for the local climate characteristics. In this paper, we studied the basic formula of the heat gain and loss through building facade. We made an simplified formula for calculating the heating and cooling energy requirement through the reference office building facade. Two climate indices; index P and S, were also set up. Index P is to evaluate the ratio of cooling and heating energy requirement, and index S is to evaluate the shading requirement for the building facade. We conducted building energy requirement evaluation for 4 locations in South Korea using the proposed index. |
