This paper reports the experience, insights and lessons obtained from a graduate course 'building energy analysis'. In the course, the heat balance method and RTS (Radiant Time Series) method were firstly introduced. The mid-term and final term projects in this course consisting of 22 graduate students (3 Ph.D. and 19 M.S. students) were two individual projects: one is yearly dynamic building energy simulation using EnergyPlus for a given office building and the other is cooling load calculation using a spreadsheet developed by each student. Based on the observation to the submitted projects, it is concluded that there are a strong discrepancy between samples due to unknown simulation parameters and subjective judgment of simulationists. It can be deduced that a standard and normative energy simulation method should be ready for better objective assessment of building energy performance. |
