This paper aims to present a new way of real-time performance optimization of building environmental control systems (heating, cooling, ventilation, electric lighting and daylighting, etc.) by e-simulation and an optimization routine. A 'minimalistic' lumped simulation model is developed to describe the physical behavior of building systems. Based on the predicted behavior from the simulation model, an optimization routine solves for optimal control variables (e.g. supply or removal of heat, outdoor airflow rate, setting of shading device, dimming of artificial lights). The optimal control variables minimize a predetermined cost function, resulting in a constrained nonlinear minimization problem. The optimization routine as well as the simulation model are embedded in a local web server which plays a role (1) to receive sensed data from the system, (2) send activation commands to motors and control devices and (3) post the current states of the system and room environment to the web. The paper presents a brief framework to realize the aforementioned control strategy. The on-going work will include real implementation of the control architecture, which will be reported elsewhere. |
